In early 1886, the Chicago Directory Company, with 21-year-old Reuben Hamilton Donnelley in charge, began to publish a phone directory three times a year for the Chicago Telephone Company. That event is generally acknowledged as the birth of the classified telephone directory advertising industry – the Yellow Pages.
The business became very entrepreneurial and grew, as the company capitalized on a new technology – the telephone.
119 years later, Yellow Pages continues to be an incredibly effective and efficient advertising medium that provides unsurpassed ROI to our customers. Technology is again playing an important role, as the Internet and growth in online usage represent an exciting opportunity for us to extend the reach of our advertisers’ messages to more consumers than ever before. And R.H. Donnelley continues to grow, as an industry leader in Yellow Pages and Online, Local Search - where people go to find the businesses and services they need whenever, wherever and however they seek information.
